Area Info - Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol has been considered an international tourist destination since the early fifties of the past century. Nowadays, modern infrastructures and an incomparable climate put the province of Málaga in the first place on the Spanish Peninsula in terms of numbers of visitors.

The Costa del Sol came into being as an international tourism resort in the second half of the last century. That was a time when a few wealthy people in search of something different came to these shores, while at the same time, mass tourism began to change the coast from a fishing and farming-based rural community to what it is today.

The Costa del Sol is situated on the south of the Iberian Peninsula and makes up the 161 kilometres of Malaga coastline, also extending without established limits into the provinces of Granada and Cádiz at both ends.

Malaga is more or less in the centre of the province’s coastline, dividing it into the Eastern Costa del Sol and the Western Costa del Sol, the two areas that make up the whole. Malaga City is also the communications hub of the province.

The 161 kilometres of Malaga province coastline is mostly beach, and with most of the hotels in the province built close to the beaches, most of the finest restaurants within shouting distance of the beaches and the best climate in Europe, it is little wonder that the beach means so much to local residents and tourists alike in Malaga.

And these are excellent beaches, cleaned every day and with all the services that only a great Spanish beach can offer: bars, restaurants, showers, beach umbrellas, beach beds, palm trees, children’s parks, special access for the disabled, lifeguard services, policing, water sports and much more.
